Meet the Artist: Weiyi

Textile Artist | London

Weiyi Chen is a London-based textile artist from Chongqing, China. Her practice weaves emotion, memory, and fragility into tactile form — translating inner landscapes through raw fibres, natural dyes, and quiet, repetitive gestures. Working intuitively, she lets material lead the rhythm, allowing threads to mirror the breath of feeling and time.

As the co-founder of TearSlaly, an interdisciplinary collective with photographer Xinyue Tao, Weiyi explores how textiles and photography can meet in shared sensitivity — a conversation between touch and light. The duo’s collaborative work dissolves boundaries between maker and participant, using nature as both material and mediator.

For Tracing the Tea: Light & Thread, Weiyi collaborated with HereThe to guide participants through a process of natural dyeing, reflection, and connection. Each piece of fabric absorbed traces of light and scent — tea as pigment, time as texture. Through these gestures, Weiyi invited participants to sense how emotion might live within material: how warmth lingers in cloth, how a thread remembers being held.

The result was a gentle entanglement of stories — threads stained by light, water, and care — reminding us that making is also a way of feeling.
